Omarosa: As Shameful as Ever on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’

by Brian Towers & David Bloomberg -- 02/21/2008
Omarosa has had a volatile season on The Celebrity Apprentice. In Episode 7, though, lines were crossed. What happened? And who gets a special, well-deserved “dishonorable mention” in this induction? (Hint: not who you think.) Read on to find out how Omarosa has landed in the Hall of Shame for the fourth time, and whom we’re nailing to the other end of her broomstick.

Right from the first episode of Celebrity Apprentice, Piers Morgan and Omarosa have butted heads. Many insults have been hurled on a wide range of topics. It even got physical when Omarosa dumped a drink on Piers (imagine the outcry if the roles were reversed!). It’s safe to say that arguably two of the least-celebrated celebrities have exhibited extreme enmity for each other.

In Episode 7, with the teams even at four apiece, Trump made the odd decision to realign the teams. More on that later, but let me recap the key events first.

As the task began, neither principle was pleased to be with the other. However, when Team Hydra met for their planning session, both agreed to put the past behind them and focus on winning the task. Piers’ exact words were, “I want to win. Cessation of all hostilities until the end of task, agreed?” and they shook hands.

Fine by me. This induction excludes all previously-spilled venom. And that decision seems especially warranted when all was fine for the rest of the day and through to the next morning. But when the teams were on the way to Central Park the next morning, things erupted.

When Piers asked Omarosa to correct the spelling of his name, Omarosa replied, “You’re not my boss, you’re my manager.” Sorry, no sale. By definition, the person assigning you work and responsible for your results is your boss. If you aren’t sure about that, the next time someone who thinks they might be your boss dumps assignments in your in-basket, jump up and insist that aren’t the boss of you, the company president is. If you still work there next year, please email me to tell me how your annual performance review went.

A few seconds later, Omarosa crumpled up her list of pledges and derisively threw it at Piers, accompanied by multiple expletives. In the real world, how many of us can do that and retain our job?

In a later interview, Omarosa explained that because she has no respect for Piers, “My whole mission was to break him down. I knew his weak spots. And, I exploited them.” Clearly, she was following her own agenda and did not care about things that ought to have taken precedence, such as presenting herself in a positive light, how this would reflect on Trump, or helping the charities involved.

While still in the van, Omarosa first insulted up Piers via his family, telling him, “Your kids hate you. They are embarrassed by you.” By bringing his personal life into the discussion, she crossed an important line. I cannot recommend you try this at work, unless you want the summer (and every subsequent season) off, without pay.

In the ensuing sequences, both talked over each other disrespectfully, with him calling her a tramp and her swearing some more. She repeatedly brought his family into it. This was not a good time for either of the participants, TV in general, or Planet Earth.

It was about this point that Piers fired Omarosa. It was certainly within his province to do so. Omarosa’s gleeful comment a few minutes later to Carol was, “That was so refreshing!” And in a subsequent clip, Omarosa said, “It was about going below the belt. In fact, I kicked him in the balls.” I cannot recommend you try this at work, either. These statements reinforced that Omarosa’s focus was personal and no longer consistent with the rest of the contestants. Indeed, she took glee in insulting him and attacking him personally. This was not about winning an argument about some particular topic; it was solely about being as nasty as she could be.

Actually, getting fired put Omarosa in a strong position. If they won the task, she was safe; if they lost, the fact that Piers excluded her so early would have been terrific ammo for the Boardroom. Either way, she could go back to the suite and get some much-needed rest. Instead, she chose to hold on to her agenda of attacking Piers.

So, despite being fired, Omarosa stayed around, frequently getting right into Piers’ face – quite literally. At one point she invaded his personal space and then forcefully said to him, “If you touch me, I’m going to punch you in the face!” When you threaten your co-workers with violence, is that often seen as an acceptable or appropriate response? Especially when you were the one who was getting into the other person’s face to begin with?

Omarosa made half-hearted attempts (compared to earlier tasks) to sell hansom cab rides – especially when she was told not to. Open defiance – those who have tried that one lately, are you expecting a big salary increase this year?

Insults from both sides continued as the day wore on. At one point Omarosa told Piers, “You’re useless as a father, you’re not even there for them. Is there another man raising your children?” Well yes, he’s divorced, so consistent with a large percentage of divorces, the mother gets primary custody of the kids. The bigger issue remains, bringing up personal situations in a business environment is playing dirty, and in the real word, it’s just not done. Omarosa was doing it solely to be as nasty and below-the-belt as she could.

In the Boardroom, bad feelings continued. Omarosa flat-out lied, saying she didn’t bring Piers’ kids into it. Is she aware the show is taped? She made up things about Piers’ kids and his relationship with them that are unfounded. Mercifully, Boardroom scenes of Team Hydra were short. But Piers had every right to be mad at her – many people in his situation would have given in to the urge to smack her upside the head.

Now, let’s look at a “dishonorable mention.” No, it’s not for Piers. It’s for Donald Trump, the production companies led by Trump and Mark Burnett, and NBC. We will never know exactly which party or parties were responsible for certain decisions, so I must use the broad brush. I have two main points of contention.

First, casting. This is supposed to be a show where celebrities engage in a series of business competitions to generate money for charity. Whomever selected Omarosa for this show needs to be condemned. Besides her obvious inability to bring in major funds, more significant is her history as a negative force. By her inclusion, what should have been an uplifting and positive experience has turned memorable for being nasty.

Secondly, Trump himself took credit for the team realignments. There’s little doubt that the move was unnecessary. Trump’s sole objective in putting Omarosa and Piers on the same team was so they would fight. Trump considers arguments better TV that showing the rewards of a well-run task. I think he got more than he expected, but it was short-sighted to expect anything else – which also made Ivanka’s appalled reaction seem a bit silly, as it was her own father that caused the situation.

Enough, let’s wrap up. For setting the inevitable wheels in motion, Donald Trump and associates earn a “dishonorable mention.” But this is Omarosa’s re-induction. For an entire day, Omarosa committed business sins and carried on personal attacks that in the real world would have gotten her escorted from the building by a couple of burly gents in Security jackets. She reminded all of us just how vile she is. Omarosa should never have been invited back to our television sets. She is an unredeemable bitch, as she showed yet again. That is why she once more being inducted into the Reality TV Hall Of Shame.
