Rules Are for Pretty People Too: True Beauty 2’s Regina Villano

by Sting7 -- 07/02/2010
True Beauty’s Regina Villano (right) has done plenty to be proud of in her 22 years on this planet. She’s even worn the Miss Teen New Jersey USA crown. So you would think Regina would know the value of discipline and respect for rules. You’d be wrong. She’d be thrown off of True Beauty 2. And now she’d be inducted into the Reality TV Hall of Shame.

The series True Beauty seeks to find inner beauty in a cast of outwardly beautiful, fame-hungry contestants. Each contestant thinks they are competing in a contest to find “The Face of Vegas.” In reality, they are being judged on their inner beauty, based on their behavior in challenges they may or may not know they are actually participating in.

In fact, the contestants only learn that their inner beauty is being assessed when they are eliminated. With this kind of secret looming over them, it is very important that their access to the outside world is very limited. If a contestant should learn that their every move is being scrutinized, obviously that contestant would have an unfair advantage over the others, and probably would not behave naturally. Thus, the contestants are not permitted to use cell phones.

This brings us to Regina Villano.

Looking at her True Beauty bio, Regina was in trouble from the start. Despite having been on the pageant circuit since she was four, and having had some success as a model and an actress, she hasn’t really learned much about grace. Her bio says, “Regina admits to being a sore loser and says that she throws a tantrum when competitions don't go her way. She says that she can fake a smile, but will call the winner a bitch under her breath.” Clearly, to win this particular competition, she would have a long way to go.

In the quest for inner beauty, Regina wasn’t showing very much on first reflection. It took just one challenge for Regina to viciously trash-talk her competition. Ironically, when a focus group was called in to critique the contestants, some very harsh criticism brought out Regina’s ugly side for all to see. One focus group member said of Regina, “Back to your pole.”

Regina’s response was to say, "I sat there and just stared at that lady, like I was just shooting her devil looks through that mirror… She better watch out after this because I'm going to be outside waiting for her at her car.” No inner beauty in that.

Then things went from bad to worse for Regina. Despite her bad behavior in the focus group challenge, she actually wasn’t the worst of the bunch and avoided the bottom two. However, unaired and unknown to the viewing audience, show staff found Regina using a cell phone. The bottom two contestants were immediately sent back to the safety of the Planet Hollywood loft and Regina was called to the carpet.

When confronted with her actions, Regina replied, "I just happened to get really home sick and I gave in to a stupid temptation. I wish I could take it back, but I can't. That moment of weakness definitely does not define or represent who I am."

Despite her pleas for another chance, rules are rules and Regina was disqualified. "I'm really upset with myself because I did this to myself," she said after her elimination. She is right about that.

Here in the Reality TV Hall of Shame, there is a precedent. Heck, there are multiple precedents. The closest is Gabriel Iglesias from Last Comic Standing, who also was caught communicating with the outside world in violation of the rules. When a contestant’s behavior is so egregious that it causes him or her to be immediately removed from the competition, it is the very definition of shameful. Of course, it’s even worse in this case because Regina was actually being judged on her “inner beauty” – one aspect of which would certainly be her ability to follow the rules of the game!

Based on her comments, Regina seems to have learned a valuable lesson. Let’s hope she really has. In the meantime, she is the latest inductee to the Reality TV Hall of Shame. Smile for the cameras, Regina.
