Hall of Shame Moment: Shawn’s Big Mouth Gets Her Fired from ‘The Apprentice: Martha Stewart’

Much has already been written about Shawn’s firing from The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. I wrote about Why Shawn Lost at RealityNewsOnline. I also wrote about why Martha Stewart didn’t get a Hall of Shame Moment for the firing. But there is still one more thing to be done to officially close the books on Shawn: She must receive recognition for her behavior in the form of a Reality TV Hall of Shame Moment.

Shawn began the task on the wrong foot by guaranteeing to Martha Stewart that her team would win (Dawn and Jim don’t agree on much, but both of them winced when Shawn said that). It only went downhill from there.

Shawn’s behavior during this task made a mention the Hall of Shame a certainty. Shawn did a little research – which apparently consisted of calling one well-known wedding cake maker and doing whatever she said – and told her team that cakes with pink icing were hot. OK, so obviously she was in favor of pink icing. Except that when she saw the cake with the pink icing, she didn’t like it and apparently (and conveniently) forgot that she was the one who told them to do that! Later, when she was trying (and failing) to sell the cake, she complained about it; and she did it again in the Conference Room.

In the midst of all this, Shawn’s big mouth flapped again. Not content with having guaranteed a win, she later told Charles, “If we don’t win this one, you have my word, you can fire me personally.”

Ouch.

In the annals of reality TV history, there are few worse things a person has said to somebody who totally controlled their fate. Of course, there was Bradford’s declaration that he didn’t need an exemption in The Apprentice 2, which led to a Hall of Shame Moment for him. And there was Tana in The Apprentice 3, who asked George if she could switch her team in the final task and then complained again about her team to Carolyn – once again, this was recognized with a Hall of Shame Moment for Tana. But there aren’t many others that rise quite to that level.

But Shawn wasn’t done yet. When her team lost (despite her guarantee to the contrary) and Charles called her on her earlier statement, Shawn was forced to backpedal furiously. She wanted to retract that statement (too late!) and claimed she was just going by the motto of “fake it ‘til you make it,” which really didn’t impress Stewart – in fact, it made things even worse.

Shawn’s ability to talk may serve her well on TV, but it most certainly did not have that effect in trying to become Martha Stewart’s apprentice. In fact, it rises (or should I say sinks) to the level previously established by Bradford shooting off his mouth to Trump – a level that requires mention here in the Hall of Shame.

Shawn’s statements show that her mouth was moving before her brain had engaged, and were so bad that Stewart had to go against precedent and pull her in against the Project Manager’s wishes just to send her packing. She made statements that were arrogant, unprofessional, and just plain stupid. She faked it alright, and now she has made it – into the Reality TV Hall of Shame.
